Gypsum is a mineral that is widely used in construction products and agricultural applications.  Gypsum can also be used as an effective flame retardant when properly sized and used in thermoset plastic applications where the processing temperature does not exceed approximately 180° F.

Gypsum contains up to 20% chemically combined water which is released at approximately 176° F. When it is blended with a suitable grade of polyester resin, the use of gypsum can lower costs and provide flame retardant properties for the manufacture of products such as FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) tub shower units, camper tops, and spas. Gypsum is an effective filler/flame retardant in acrylic thermal formed and gel coated applications.
